This morning, the Viet Nam National Mine Action Steering Committee held a conference to review the implementation of the national action program to overcome the consequences of explosives remnant of war in Vietnam for the period 2010-2020 and mission orientation for the period 2021-2025 (Program 504).
Senior Lieutenant General Hoang Xuan Chien, Deputy Minister of National Defense, said that according to a survey of bomb and mines, before the issuance of the national mine action program, the concentration of landmines pollution in Vietnam was 6.1 million hectares, accounting for 18.82% of the country's land area.
In the period of 2020-2025, around 450,000 ha of land has surveyed and cleared, up to now, the contaminated area has reduced to 5.6 million ha.
With the drastic direction of the Prime Minister, the Ministry of National Defense coordinated with the ministries, branches and localities to organize the investigation, survey and mapping of pollution of mines and unexplosives nationwide, serving as a basis for the investigation, planning and organizing implementation.
Governments of the United States, Japan, Korea, UK, Australia, Norway, international organizations MAO, NFA, Golden West, Peace Tree,... have supported with ODA projects bringing practical effects to people's lives and make important contributions to socio-economic development.
The Deputy Minister said that the orientation of the plan of mine action in the 2021-2025 period is to increase the speed of clearance to about 75,000 ha per years (an increase of about 50% compared to before); focus on implementing in key areas, heavily polluted areas, with high risk of unsafety...
Representatives of ministries, departments, branches and localities, ambassadors, representatives of international organizations spoke, assessed the results and achievements in mine action in Vietnam for the period of 2010 - 2020 and orientation of the mission plan for the period of 2021 - 2025. Efforts of the Party, Government and army in mine action, stabilizing people's lives, contributing to ensuring national defense and security, serving socio-economic development and other international funding activities for post-war mine recovery in Vietnam.
